Educational Barriers

$100,000.0 Needed Donation

Overview

Access to education remains one of the most significant challenges for girls and women around the world. Poverty, cultural norms, early marriage, gender-based violence, disability, and displacement continue to prevent millions of girls from attending or completing school. Even when enrolled, many face unsafe environments, lack of menstrual hygiene facilities, or social pressures to prioritize domestic responsibilities over learning. For girls with disabilities, ethnic minorities, or those living in rural and conflict-affected regions, the barriers are even greater. Without inclusive, quality education, women and girls are left without the tools to pursue opportunity, independence, and leadership—limiting their full potential and silencing their voices before they are even heard.

Awareness & Education for Equal Learning Rights

Raising awareness about the importance of girls’ education is a key part of breaking this cycle. At WakeUp Her, we work to shift social narratives that devalue girls’ learning and challenge the idea that education is only for boys. We engage parents, community leaders, and youth through public discussions and campaigns that highlight the long-term social and economic impact of educating girls. Our programs emphasize the connection between education, health, and empowerment—encouraging families to see education not just as an academic pursuit, but as a path to dignity, safety, and choice.

We also focus on the need for safe learning environments, gender-sensitive teacher training, and inclusive curricula. By educating teachers, school boards, and caregivers on the unique challenges girls face—especially during adolescence—we aim to create systems that foster belonging, respect, and growth. Awareness includes addressing gender bias in career guidance, ensuring that girls are encouraged to pursue STEM, technical fields, and leadership roles.

Support, Access & Advocacy for Girls' Education

To ensure every girl has the chance to learn, we provide direct support to overcome material and social barriers. WakeUp Her offers scholarships, school kits, transportation aid, and mentorship programs to help girls stay in school, especially those from low-income, refugee, or marginalized backgrounds. We also support girls dealing with menstrual stigma, providing sanitary products and safe, private spaces in schools.

Our advocacy goes further—pushing for education policies that protect girls from violence, harassment, and discrimination, and ensure access for girls with disabilities. We collaborate with local schools and international partners to champion gender equity in education funding, the elimination of child marriage, and increased female representation in teaching and leadership. Education is not just about books—it’s about equipping girls with the skills and confidence to break cycles of poverty and lead change in their communities.
