Unpaid & Undervalued Care Work

$100,000.0 Needed Donation

Overview

Across every society, women shoulder the vast majority of unpaid caregiving and domestic responsibilities—from raising children and caring for elderly family members to maintaining households and providing emotional labor. Despite its critical role in sustaining families and communities, this work is undervalued, invisible in economic systems, and largely excluded from social protection and labor rights. As a result, women often face limited opportunities for education, employment, and financial independence, reinforcing cycles of poverty and gender inequality. This imbalance not only strains women’s health and time but also perpetuates the perception that caregiving is solely a woman’s duty—rather than a shared social responsibility.

Awareness & Education for Equal Recognition

At WakeUp Her, we are committed to challenging the systemic undervaluing of care work by promoting public awareness of its economic and emotional significance. We aim to shift societal mindsets that dismiss unpaid care as “natural” for women, instead framing it as real labor that deserves recognition, respect, and redistribution

Our education campaigns encourage shared household roles, promote inclusive family dynamics, and advocate for policies that recognize the care economy. We also work with schools, media, and faith-based institutions to reframe caregiving as a collective responsibility, empowering both men and women to participate equally in nurturing and sustaining families.

Support, Redistribution & Economic Justice

WakeUp Her supports policies that compensate and redistribute unpaid care work, such as paid family leave, caregiver allowances, flexible work arrangements, and public investment in childcare and eldercare services. We provide resources, advocacy tools, and support groups for women caregivers, while pushing governments and employers to adopt care-sensitive budgeting and social protection systems

We also facilitate community programs that relieve caregiving burdens—including respite care services, caregiver training, and mental health support. Through this, we not only uplift the well-being of caregivers but also pave the way for greater gender equality, economic freedom, and shared responsibility in homes and societies.
